Update: Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car reopens after two-month closure

After two-month maintenance after the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car accident, the cable car finally opens again on 5th of April 2012 (Thursday).

Extended Suspension of Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car till April 2012 due to malfunction

Bad news for fans of the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car attraction. Although it was predicted that Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car would take only 10-day maintenance due to the recent Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car accident, it seems that the system will remain closed two more months. The suspension will extend to early beginning of April 2012.

Preliminary investigations on Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car accident found the wearing of a bearing on the haul rope pulley wheel which can affect and result in slight vibrations. These slight vibrations were detected by the automatic monitoring system and caused the complete cable car system to stop. Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car ride stopped automatically as a safety feature. It actually wouldn’t affect the overall safety of the cable car operations. However, as the Ngong Ping 360 management would put it: the wearing could result in a less comfortable ride.

As a precautious measure, Ngong Ping 360 management decided not only to replace the faulty bearings, but also to exchange the remaining bearings as well. In addition, the regular maintenance work (annual testing of the complete systems). The annual maintenance which is usually scheduled around June will be advanced and incorporate after the replacements of the bearings is completed. Currently, the overall estimated time schedule to finish the replacement as well as the annual testing will be roughly two month. Ngong Ping 360 management didn’t announce an exact date for the resumption of Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car system, but reminded visitors that weather is one of the key factors of replacing the faulty parts as soon as possible.

On the 25th of January 2012, more than 800 passengers were trapped in the hanging cable car cabins for more than 90 minutes.
