Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car Closes Until April 2012
We have some bad news for fans of the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car attraction. Due to technical and mechanical problems in the recent days (please refer to our earlier post for more information about the incidence of Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car happened on 25th of January ) the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car system will remain closed until the early beginning of April 2012.
Preliminary investigations found the wearing of a bearing on the haul rope pulley wheel which can affect and result in slight vibrations. These slight vibrations were picked up by the automatic monitoring system and caused the complete Cable Car system to stop. Although, the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car ride has been stopped automatically as a safety feature, it actually wouldn’t affect the overall safety of the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car operation or as Ngong Ping 360 management would put it: the wearing could result in a less comfortable ride.
However, as a precautious measure Ngong Ping 360 management decided not only to replace the faulty bearings, but also to exchange the remaining bearings as well. In addition, the regular maintenance work (annual testing of the complete systems) which is usually scheduled around June will be advanced and incorporate after the replacements of the bearings have been completed. Currently, the overall estimated time schedule to finish the replacement as well as the annual testing will be roughly two month. Ngong Ping 360 management didn’t announce an exact date for the resumption of the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car system, but reminded visitors that weather is one of the key factors of replacing the faulty parts as soon as possible.
Ngong Ping Village as well as the attractions such as Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, Monkey’s Tale Theater or Ngong Ping Nature Centre remains open during the replacement and testing period. Visitors have the options to visit the attractions either by taxi or bus. If you decide to travel by taxi expect to pay around HK$ 180. As an alternative, you can take the New Lantau Bus No. 23. For more information about ticket prices and schedule please refer to the following link of the New Lantau Bus No. 23.
For visitors who have already booked or purchased tickets, you can change the itinerary and/or ticket arrangement at the Cable Car Tung Chung Terminal or at the temporary service stands set aside the Customer Service Counters at the MTR Kowloon Tong Station, MTR Hong Kong Station and MTR Lai King Station.
