Where to buy Apple products” is a question on many visitors’ mind when visiting Hong Kong. No only because Hong Kong is aways among the cities getting the latest models first, but also because Hong Kong has no sales tax (duty free). The price of Apple products is relatively cheaper in Hong Kong.

No matter where you are in the world Apple products are always hot items. With every new release of the iPhone, iPad, iPad Air or iPad Mini people queue up days in advance to be first one to own the latest edition resulting not only in endless lines, but sometimes even in quarrels and fights.

Where to buy Apple products in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is crazy for Apple products, especially iPhone

Knowing about how popular Apple products are helps you understand the market of Apple in Hong Kong. Hong Kong people are very trendy when it comes to technology and Apple products. The density of iPhone and iPad users in Hong Kong seems to be extremely high compared to other metropolitan cities and countries. When you take the MTR, it seems that almost every single Hong Kong person owns one of Apple products. When Apple releases new products people get crazy like everywhere else in the world.

It gives Hong Kong the convenience to purchase IT items as well as Apple products. Hundreds of electronic shops are throughout everywhere in Hong Kong.

How to buy Apple products in Hong Kong?

The official prices of Apple products in Hong Kong are relatively lower than many countries as well as Mainland China. It makes Hong Kong an attractive place to purchase Apple products. However, not every product is immediately available or easily accessible on the market.

Due to Apple’s strategy only to release a limited number of the new products at the launch, the Apple Online store usually sold out its latest releases literally within seconds or minutes in Hong Kong in the past. Even if you were opting to buy Apple products from Apple Hong Kong’s website, you were required to provide a Hong Kong address or personal identity. Trying to buy the latest iPhone or iPad equals was like playing a lottery.

The situation changed since iPhone 7 that fans didn’t need to stand in line overnight fighting for the latest products. However, the popular color and capacity is still very difficult to get on the launch day, even for iPhone 13.

Special policy for iPhone and iPad in official Apple Stores in the past

Starting from New iPad in 2012, official Apple Store stopped selling newly launched products to walk-in customers to prevent unauthorized resellers. Apple introduced “a lottery system” when iPhone 5 was released. Similar things happened when the iPhone 5s was release in 2013.

When iPhone 6 was launched, Apple launched online store for reservation 8:00 am everyday and it was sold out within seconds. Many professional re-sellers used programmed codes and bots to beat normal customers. iPhone 6’s market price reached to HK$15,000 for the 16gb version (official price was around HK$ 5,588). For over a month, it was impossible to get iPhone 6 with a reasonable price.

Are there cheaper prices for Apple products?

I often get the question if there are any places that sell Apple products cheaper than the official Apple store. Usually, you will have a very hard time finding Apple products at a cheaper price. If you really find them, you should be very alerted that these might be either parallel imports (without warranty and/or SIM-locked) and/or are counterfeits/fake.

As Hong Kong is crazy for Apple products that Apple products are too popular that will easily be out of stock. Having said this, there is always the option to ask for a discount if you pay cash. Especially small stores happily accept cash and will give you either some additional goodies or gadgets (such as webcam, mouse, USB keys, bag, etc.) or depending on the product you buy a cash discount (this can be up to HK$ 500 for a MacBook Pro).

Authorized Dealers and Resellers

Before Apple launched its flagship store in the IFC Mall, Apple products were (and still are) officially sold through Authorized Dealers and Reseller including electronic chain stores such as Broadway, Fortress or Suning. In the following we would like to introduce the main key players.

Purchasing from authorized resellers can enjoy the same warranty from Apple. Usually authorized resellers offer the same prices with Apple official store. However, sometimes discounts will be applied to the displayed items.

Two of the biggest authorized resellers “DG Lifestyle” and “Studio A” are now merged under The S.A Group. The S.A Group has also stores in Taiwan, Korea and Mainland China. Besides having physical stores, you can also purchase Apple and electronic items through their online store.

Since both companies operate under their original name we list them separately below.

The Designergroup (DG) Lifestyle Store is the largest Apple Reseller Chain Store in Hong Kong. This authorized reseller also used to have outlets in Macau and Singapore.

Several DG Lifestyle Stores has been closed due to the merger and acquisition of the SA Group. Currently, there are 5 DG Lifestyle stores left.

In addition, the DG Lifestyle Store operates a unique venture in Hong Kong called the DG “I” Stations. These I-Stations are vending machines filled with electronic goods and gadgets (iPhone protectors, cases, battery packs, etc.). Currently, you are able to find about 11 of these I-Stations in various MTR stations. The company plans to expand this kind of business in the upcoming months to about 50 vending machines. Last but not least, the LS NewYork Store by DG also belongs to this company. At the LS NewYork Store you are able to find hip and trendy accessories for your iPhone, iPad or MacBook ranging from stickers to sleeves, bags and cases.

Studio A is a Taiwan based Apple authorized reseller and is aggressively expanding into the Hong Kong, Mainland China and Korea markets. Studio A opened its first store in Causeway Bay in 2010.

Today the company merged with DG Lifestyle. Currently, there are four Studio A stores in Hong Kong.

The stores are similar built to other authorized resellers. They offer a very spacious and very well lit shopping environment displaying all the major Apple products and accessories. Besides having all the Apple products ranging from the iPhone to the iPod, the real interesting part of Studio A is the ownership. No one less than the younger brother of Foxconn’s CEO himself runs this reselling business. It seems like that business needs to stay in the family.

Unfortunately, the one in Wan Chai closed down. However, 1Spot’s flagship store in Mongkok offers all the latest electronic gear including Apple’s latest products on over 2,000 sq. ft. Similar to other authorized Apple Retailer they carry most of the Apple products ranging from iMacs, MacBooks, Apple Watch Sport, iPads to iPods and accessories.

Buy From Other Ways

Besides the above official Apple Stores and Apple authorized resellers, there are also other possibilities to purchase Apple products.

Some stores of the big electronic chains such as Fortress, Broadway, Chung Yuen or Suning Citicall are Apple Shops. As we mentioned above, these shops are designed by Apple and sell all the products. Sometimes they will raise the prices of popular products (e.g. when iPhone 6 was just launched).

Since their supply is provided by Apple directly, the stocks in these chain stores are not certain. Even the staffs in the store cannot answer you when they will have new stock again.

Especially for new iPhone and iPad, since Apple changed the policy of selling to walk-in guests, you need a little bit luck if you decide to visit one of them. There was case that two staffs of Fortress held 170 iPhone4 and told the customers it was out of stock. Because they could sell all the iPhone to parallel traders and make up to HK$ 500 profit per iPhone. In another case, a staff of Fortress also was charged by taking bribes from parallel traders up to HK$ 100 for each iPad 2 and also by revealing the arrival time and date of next batch of iPad stock. Selling newly launched Apple products to parallel traders once became an relaxing way for people to make money.

However, you don’t need to worry about fake items or warranty if purchasing from these chain stores.

You can also have a look at the computer centers in Hong Kong. Hong Kong has several large computer centers carrying Apple products as well as Apple accessaries, such as Mongkok, Wan Chai or Golden Computer Center & Arcade in Sham Shui Po. Please follow the link for a detailed overview of the different Computer Centers in Hong Kong. Please note and be aware that that these places sell also re-imported products.

Sin Tat Plaza is located on Argyle street Mongkok (see map), where is considered as a collection of all the parallel traders of cellphones and notebooks and it is where all those housewives sell the iphone to. You can find both brand new phones and secondhand phones here. Be careful that lots of their phones are parallel imports that you will not get formal warranty.

Besides, for iPhone and iPad, sometimes their prices is much higher than original prices. Especially when new Apple products are launched, you will find parallel traders sitting outside Sin Tat Plaza to buy and resell to make quick money.

Also be careful that some shops will cheat the customers with secondhand phones or replaced parts.

Last but not least, if you are opting to purchase an iPhone you also can try your luck at one of Hong Kong’s mobile carriers such as 3, SmarTone or 1010. They usually claim to have plenty of stock. Although, you can get almost immediately a subsidized iPhone it also means that you have to sign a 2-year mobile phone contract which might not the best option especially if you are a short-time visitor to Hong Kong.

Due to Hong Kong’s density it seems for outsiders that Hong Kong is “Apple Land”. Certainly, Hong Kong has a very high number of Authorized Apple Resellers, but it can be quite tough to hunt down the latest releases of the iPhone or iPads due to its popularity. As mentioned above, usually when the latest iPhone hits the (online) store it is sold out within seconds. Other products such as the MacBook or MacBook Air are commonly available.

Where is the best place to buy Apple products in Hong Kong?

For convenience, we would recommend shopping in Mongkok or in Causeway Bay (especially if you are pressed for time). Especially in Causeway Bay, there are at least 4 or 5 of the above mentioned authorized dealers within walking distance (not including Fortress and Broadway stores). In case some items are sold out, you easily can walk to the next authorized shop and if this is not enough just stroll in at Fortress, Broadway or Suning as well as official Apple Store. Plus you have several shopping malls in close proximity. If this is not enough, Wan Chai and Central are just a few minutes away by MTR.

The other location we can recommend is Mongkok. The strength of Mongkok is the Sai Yeung Choi Street or better known as the Electronics Street. Basically, you just need to stroll along this street. There are numerous Fortress, Broadway and other electronic stores. Plus you have the Mongkok Computer Centre in close distance. And if this is not enough for you than you could have a look and try the luxury shopping mall of Langham Place.
