With every new release of the iPhone or iPad people queue up days in advance to be one of the first one to own the latest edition resulting not only in endless lines, but sometimes even in quarreling and fights.

Hong Kong people love technology and Apple products. The density of iPhone and iPad users in Hong Kong seems (compared to other metropolitan cities or countries) to be extremely high. Especially, when you take the MTR it seems that almost every single Hong Kong person owns one of Steve Jobs products and when Apple releases new products people get crazy like everywhere else in the world (please have a look at our post (Updated News: How to Purchase The New iPad in Hong Kong?). Due to Apple’s strategy only to release a limited number of the new products at the launch, the Apple Online store usually sells its latest releases literally within seconds or minutes in Hong Kong. Even if you are opting to buy Apple products from Apple Hong Kong website, you are required to provide a Hong Kong address.Trying to buy the latest iPhone or iPad equals like playing a lottery (hoping to get the first price) and even standing in line for hours or even days in advance does not always lead to success (please have a look at our post (How to Purchase iPhone 5 in Hong Kong (Step by Step Tutorial).. When the iPhone5 released on Semptember 2012, everywhere’s iPhone5 were sold out and the retail price of parallel traders once reached to HK$ 8500-HK$ 10000 (original price was about HK$ 5588 for 16G).

However, you don’t need to worry. There are plenty of alternatives where to buy Apple products such as the latest iPhone, iPad, iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook, Macbook Air and/or Apple accessories in Hong Kong ranging from the official Apple stores, big electronic chain stores to authorized dealers and reliable small shops and importers.

We often get the question if there are any places that sell Apple products cheaper than the official Apple store. Usually, you will have a very hard time finding Apple products at a cheaper price. If you really find them, you should be very alert that these might be either parallel imports (without warranty and/or SIM-locked) and/or are counterfeits/fake ones because Apple products are too popular that will easily be out of stock. You can try to ask for a discount if you pay cash. Especially small stores happily accept cash and will give you either some additional goodies or gadgets (such as webcam, mouse, USB keys, bag, etc.) or depending on the product you buy a cash discount (this can be up to HK$ 500 for a MacBook Pro).

In the following we would like to provide you an overview of stores. Please keep in mind that this list is by no means complete or reflect any particular ranking. We tried our best to compile this list and since Hong Kong is a fast moving market it is sheer impossible to keep track with new stores, removing stores, etc. Therefore, we would like to encourage you to help us to keep the list updated. There are three kinds of stores selling Apple products: Apple Shop, Apple Authorized Reseller and Apple Premium Reseller.

-Apple Shop: Basically located in the computer department store where has multi-brand electronis. You will find the large backlit Apple logo of the Apple shop (sometimes looks like a counter). You also will find Apple-trained experts giving you suggestions and help. In Hong Kong, these shops are located in chain stores Broadway, Fortress as well as Suning Citicall.

-Apple Authorized Reseller: Hong Kong has plenty of Authorized Resellers, which are official dealers where you can get formal warranty from Apple company.

-Apple Premium Reseller: Generally it belongs to authorized reseller but unlike authorized reseller, Apple Premium Reseller Store is special designed where you can try all the products and the store focuses exclusively on the Mac, iPod and iPhone platform. Apple certified staff will provide help on all the products.

Apple Flagship Store in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s first Apple store officially opened in IFC Mall in Central on September 23rd, 2011. Apple fans from then on can enjoy an unique shopping atmosphere on two floors. The whole flagship store is very delicate designed featuring lots of space, light and glass making it a fun and enjoyable shopping experience. The first floor is entirely dedicated to all of the Apple products ranging from the iPhone to the latest MacBook Air. Don’t forget to check out the second floor and admire the unique signature glass staircase leading your way up. At the second floor you are able to try products and is mainly the personal set-up area for customers personalizing there products. About 300 employees and sales persons will try to help you to selection the right gadget or accessories.

The Designergroup (DG) Lifestyle Store is the largest Apple Reseller Chain Store in Hong Kong. This authorized reseller also has outlets in Macau and Singapore and has currently altogether about 17 DG Lifestyle stores. Also, the DG Lifestyle Store has shops at the Hong Kong International Airport (Terminal 1 and 2) as well as one which sells used Macs in Wan Chai.

In addition, the DG Lifestyle Store operates a unique venture in Hong Kong called the DG “I” Stations. These I-Stations are vending machines filled with electronic goods and gadgets (iPhone protectors, cases, battery packs, etc.). Studio A is a Taiwan based Apple Premium Reseller and is aggressively expanding into the Hong Kong, Mainland China and Korea markets. The Apple Premium Reseller Studio A opened its first store in Causeway Bay in 2010. Currently, there are four Studio A stores in Hong Kong. The others ones are in Tsim Sha Tsui, Tsuen Wan and Tuen Mun. The stores are similar built to other authorized resellers. They offer a very spacious and very well lit shopping environment displaying all the major Apple products and accessories. Besides having all the Apple products ranging from the iPhone to the iPod, the real interesting part of Studio A is the ownership. No one less than the younger brother of Foxconn’s CEO himself runs this reselling business. It seems like that business needs to stay in the family.

Buy in big electronics chain stores　[Go Back]

Besides buying Apple products at the above authorized resellers, you also can purchase the Apple products in big electronic chains such as Fortress, Broadway or Suning. They will sell all the products with original prices no matter how popular the products are. However, the stocks in these chain stores are not certain. Even the staffs in the store cannot answer you when they will have new stock again. Sometimes, they will get limited number of stock that will be sold out immediately. Especially when everywhere the iPhone and iPad are sold out, some of the staffs even keep like 10-20 pieces for themselves, although it is actually not allowed by the company. You need a little bit luck if you decide to visit one of them. There was case that two staffs of Fortress held 170 iPhone4 last year and told the customers it was out of stock. Because they could sell all the iPhone to parallel traders and make up to HK$ 500 profit per iPhone. Last July, another staff of Fortress also was charged by taking bribes from parallel traders up to HK$ 100 for each iPad 2 and also by revealling the arrival time and date of next batch of iPad stock. Selling iPhone4s to parallel traders once became an relaxing way for people to make money. Many housewives in Hong Kong stood in line outside these chain stores everyday 5:00am in the morning (it opened on 10:30am) and purchased 2 iPhone which could generate up to HK$ 2000 profit per day.

Sin Tat Plaza is located on Argyle street Mongkok (see map), where is considered as a collection of all the parallel traders of cellphones and notebooks and it is where all those housewives sell the iphone to. You can find both brand new phones and secondhand phones here. Be careful that lots of their phones are parallel imports that you will not get formal warranty. Besides, for iPhone and iPad, their prices is much higher than original prices. Some shops will cheat the customers with secondhand phones.

Last but not least, if you are opting to purchase an iPhone you also can try your luck at one of Hong Kong’s mobile carriers such as 3, SmarTone or 1010. They usually claim to have plenty of stock. Although, you can get almost immediately a subsidized iPhone it also means that you have to sign a 2-year mobile phone contract which might not the best option especially if you are a short-time visitor to Hong Kong.

The Bottomline: Due to Hong Kong’s density it seems for outsiders that Hong Kong is “Apple Land”. Certainly, Hong Kong has a very high number of Authorized Apple Resellers, but it can be quite tough to hunt down the latest releases of the iPhone or iPads due to its popularity. As mentioned above, usually when the latest iPhone hits the (online) store it is sold out within seconds. Other products such as the MacBook or MacBook Air are commonly available.

Where is the best place to buy Apple products in Hong Kong such as the iPhone, iPad and accessories? Besides the official Apple Flagship store in the IFC Mall, we would recommend shopping in Mongkok or in Causeway Bay (especially if you are pressed for time). Especially in Causeway Bay, there are at least 4 or 5 of the above mentioned authorized dealers within walking distance (not including Fortress and Broadway stores). In case some items are sold out, you easily can walk to the next authorized shop and if this is not enough just stroll in at Fortress, Broadway or Suning. Plus you have several shopping malls in close proximity. If this is not enough, Wan Chai and Central are just a few minutes away by MTR.

The other location we can recommend is Mongkok. The strength of Mongkok is the Sai Yeung Choi Street or better known as the Electronics Street. Basically, you just need to stroll along this street. There are numerous Fortress, Broadway and other electronic stores. Plus you have the Mongkok Computer Center in close distance. And if this is not enough for you than you could have a look and try the luxury shopping mall of Langham Place.

Update: Due to the latest developments in Mainland China and Hong Kong, the Apple store will not sell any iPhone 4s to walk-in customers anymore. Apple implemented a lottery like system to prevent and fighting the practices of scalpers. Customers need an official HK-ID to registrate online in a strict three hour window. Winners will be notified by email before 9:00pm at the same day and have to pick up the iPhone 4s in person with the ID at the next day.
