The Jade Market is just one subway stop away from Mongkok station and the Ladies Market. You can even stroll down there, but we recommend you to take the MTR since you do need to walk an additional 10 minutes to the Jade Market even from the MTR Yau Ma Tei station. Both MTR lines Tsuen Wan as well as the green Kwun Tong Line will take you to Yau Ma Tei station. Traveling time is just about 3 minutes and the single fare journey is HK$ 4.0. After you arrived exit Yau Ma Tei station through Exit C and follow the pink street signs leading you along Kansu Street to the entrance of the Jade market. There is a second entrance on the backside on Battery Street.

Not only, but especially in China, jade is a very precious stone or crystal and many people believe it has a positive influence on luck and prosperity and ward off ghosts, bad luck and other health related hazards. The color of jade varies and there is a great variety of colors you can choose: from green to yellow, brown to even complete white. The Chinese character for jade is a combination of beauty and purity and therefore often associated with long life and/or good health. The market is open from Monday-Saturday from 10:00am-04:00pm. Between Kansu Street and Jordan Road, on Canton Road, is another Jade Street located. There are several shops and stores that sell jade as well, too.

Some piece of advice if you really opt to purchase jade: Don’t expect to find the best jade or great bargains there. The Jade Market is more of a bazaar, tid-bits or second-hand type kind of market. It is great if you look for some decorative cheap items or some not too expensive souvenirs to take back home. If you are really looking for good quality jade you have to go to an official and licensed shop by the Hong Kong Tourism Association. In addition, be aware that as a foreigner shops will give you higher prices and you need to know your bargaining skills. Furthermore, be sure that if you are ready to purchase that the jade is real and not a fake one made of glass or plastic. Take a close look against the sunlight to spot if there are any “bubbles” inside the jade – usually an indication that jade has been manipulated with plastic or silicon.
