Once you reach the entrance of Big Buddha you already will see the signs leading you to the Wisdom Path in close vicinity. Simply follow the colorful advertisement boards of Vitasoy and Sprite which are leading you the way to a “Tea Garden Restaurant”. Walking to the Wisdom Path will take you about 10 – 15 minutes depending on your speed and how much you are distracted by the surroundings. The walk is actually quite nice and gentle and easily manageable for everyone. Since many visitors usually don’t know about the Wisdom Path or bother to take their time to discover and explore the Wisdom Path, one nice side effect is that this attraction is not as crowded as the main attraction such as the Big Buddha.

When you reach the Wisdom Path you will see thirty-eight timber columns or beams. Each of these timber columns is about 8 – 10 meter high and has Chinese words inscribed on it. The Chinese characters from a 260-word prayer which are the words of the Heart Sutra (in case you wonder: the Heart Sutra is a well-known prayer used by Buddhists). Unfortunately, there are no English translations or explanation at this beautiful location, but you still can enjoy the beauty and tranquil atmosphere of the Wisdom Path.

When you look closely, you also will notice that the thirty-eight timber columns of Wisdom Path will form the figure eight and you might wonder why the timber columns of the Wisdom Path are arranged this way and not in a line, parallel or even square from. The “official” reason why the timber columns of the Wisdom Path are arranged as a figure eight is that the arrangement represents and symbolizes “infinity”. Another explanation can be seen that the arrangement of columns of the Wisdom Path blends into the beauty of the landscape. When you walk along the Wisdom Path you will notice one timber column at that the top which is different than the rest. Did you notice that this single timber column of the Wisdom Path has no inscription? The reason behind the empty column is that it represents the meaning of emptiness.

Insider Tips: When you walk just a few steps further of the entrance of the Wisdom Path you will get to a small viewing platform where you admire the complete arrangement of the thirty-eight timber columns. It is also the entrance or end of the one of the Lantau Hiking Trails.

Last but not least, the Wisdom Path is also surrounded by stunning and beautiful scenery. Enjoy beautiful views of the Hong Kong’s second highest Peak the Lantau Peak which is famous for its amazing sunrise scenery.
