What is Bing Sutt ?
“Bing Sutt” means “Ice Room” in Cantonese. It is a type of traditional coffee house in Hong Kong and was very popular during 1950s – 1960s. It was a place for people to meet, take a break, enjoy a coffee, tea, iced beverages or trendy Western treats such as ice cream and soda pop. It used to be a unique place where East meets West and cultures, styles, traditions and modernity blended and easily mixed.
It is also believed to be the predecessor of Cha Chaan Teng. Nowadays there are only a few of Bing Sutt left in residential areas where you can get some light meals and drinks. Since Bing Sutt are replaced by the modern cafes and is getting less and less, dining in such old style Bing Sutt becomes more precious now in Hong Kong.

“Outside the Starbucks near the stairs on the end of Duddell Street, there are four oldest and remaining gas-powered street lamps. While other gas lamps are replaced by electrical lamps, they are still functioning from 6:00pm to 6:00am. Duddell Street Stairs as well as the Gas Lamps are one of the most popular photo shooting spots in Hong Kong as well.”
