Another character themed restaurant opened in Hong Kong this October. This time Japanese tea house Yumemiya Café invited the popular local comic character Din Dong and his friend Jentle Cat and created the cute Din Dong x Yumemiya Café. Before this, Hong Kong already have many other Character Themed Restaurants.

Did you know Din Dong ?

Din Dong and Jentle Cat has been created by John Chan and Pam Hung (two local Hong Kong artists). The two cute cartoon characters immediately won not only the hearts of us locals, but also spread to other Asian countries including Taiwan. Din Dong has been so popular that there have been many crossovers including with Hello Kitty, Snoopy, Canon or instant messenger LINE. Din Dong and his friend Jentle Cat can even be found at the Avenue of Comic Stars.

Restaurant Design of Din Dong x Yumemiya Café

Yumemiya Café is a subdivision of Japanese chain restaurant Italian Tomato. Thus the whole restaurant design including the dressing style of Din Dong are typical Japanese.

When you arrive at the Din Dong x Yumemiya Café, you already will notice two huge Din Dong figures holding the special Din Dong menu.

The highlight to me(for many customers too) is that you can dine with life-sized Din Dong plush figures. Altogether, the restaurant has three life-sized Din Dong sitting next to the table, allowing guests to dine with and take picture. Needless to point out that no matter if young or old, everyone would love to dine with Din Dong. If you also want one, you may have to wait a little bit long time if they are not available.

Din Dong Food Designs

The Din Dong x Yumemiya Café adapted and changed almost their complete menu and offer special designed food, drinks, cakes and desserts with the cute Hong Kong cat. The concepts of the Yumemiya Restaurants are more designed to be a tea house providing a relaxing atmosphere while enjoying some desserts, cold drinks or other refreshments. However, you don’t need to worry. You are also able to get some main courses as well.

Since I arrived at the afternoon, I decided to satisfy my sweet tooth and ordered some special Din Dong desserts. The Din Dong x Yumemiya Café created some special Hong Kong type dessert toasts (with honey, strawberry and green tea & red bean flavor) and I decided to give the green tea & red bean flavor a try.

Aside from the Din Dong toasts there are also special designed pancakes, cakes, parfaits, ice-creams (made with Hokkaido milk) and of course Din Dong Matcha Latte and Chocolate. I finally decided on the Din Dong and Jentle-Cat Hokkaido milk soft ice-cream. The taste was delicious and I could keep the lovely cup for memory.

  • “In case you would love to dine with Din Dong, it is probably best to call in and make reservation.”

  • “The prices on menu are relatively higher than other restaurants of the same level in Hong Kong. For example, two rice cakes cost HK$ 32 and a curry chicken rice set costs HK$ 83. Considering it’s a themed restaurant that needs to cope with licence and renovation expense, it’s somehow acceptable.”

  • “Like every themed restaurant, you are able to purchase some special designed merchandise. A limited Din Dong bowl and cup set for HK$ 148 upon any purchase.”
