The Hong Kong Tourism Board and the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong conjointly launched the fascinating programme “Experience Cantopera: A Taste of Hong Kong’s Intangible Cultural Heritage”.

The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong took the responsibility to promote one of Hong Kong’s most valuable cultural assets: the Cantonese Opera. In fact, the Cantonese Opera is Hong Kong’s first performing art to be listed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO.

Young and upcoming artists from the Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong will perform traditional Cantonese Operas to the public.  The “Experience Cantopera: A Taste of Hong Kong’s Intangible Cultural Heritage” is tailor-made especially for foreign visitors.  Visitors and Cantonese Opera lovers have the opportunity to experience the unique music and vocal style of the Cantonese Opera and learn to appreciate the poetic and symbolic meanings of movements and gestures of this traditional art form. In addition, visitors have the chance to enjoy a video on the history and development of this unique art form, demonstrations of martial arts choreography and excerpts from performances. Meeting the performing Cantonese Opera artists after the show is one of the highlights of the “Experience Cantopera: A Taste of Hong Kong’s Intangible Cultural Heritage” programme. Last but not least, unique souvenirs will be available at the theater foyer of the newly renovated Yau Mau Tei Theater.

The “Experience Cantopera: A Taste of Hong Kong’s Intangible Cultural Heritage” will last from October 10th, 2012 till February 3rd, 2012. Tickets are priced at HK$ 150 and are available through URBITIX.

Currently, there are 72 performances scheduled. Each Cantonese Opera performance will last 45 minutes.
