Aqua Luna
Chinese junk harbour tour

When walking along the Victoria Harbour in TST or Central, you can easily spot the red-sail Chinese junk sailing slowly over the harbour. The design of Aqua Luna and Dukling boats represent the typical fishing boat of Hong Kong, which is also used as the logo of Hong Kong Tourism Board.

Taking Aqua Luna to sail on Victoria Harbour is a unique experience. This junk boat is operated by the Aqua Restaurant Group, the company who also runs the famous luxury restaurants and rooftop bars such as Aqua Spirit Bar (18/F) and Vista Bar (30/F).

In the past few years, there was only a red-sail Aqua Luna boat. Until 2017 April, a white-sail junk boat started its service. However, it has been changed to dark orange sail for the moment.

Although they are also considered as one of the last remaining traditional junks still in operation in Hong Kong, they are actually the replicas from the local pirate ships. The Chinese name of Aqua Luna is “Cheung Po Tsai”, a famous local pirate in Qing Dynasty with many legends.

The Aqua Luna was hand-crafted with the traditional shipbuilding technique. It has double decks with 140 square meters, accommodating around 80 passengers. You can enjoy the impressive and stunning skyline in a sophisticated way with cocktails and nestle down in some stylish lounge beds.

Besides normal tour, there are also tours with Dim Sum snack, afternoon tea set, buffet on board as well as dinner set in Hu Tong

Dukling harbour tour/junk trip
The last authentic traditional fishing junk

Dukling as the first on the list because she is the only authentic Chinese junk boat on Victoria Harbour.

Dukling was built in Macau in the 1950s and served as a fishing boat in Hong Kong till 1985. She was restored to her original glory and re-sails since 2005. She is truly an icon and “the only original sailing junk in Hong Kong”. Dukling represents Hong Kong’s glorious history as well as the impression while here was a fishing village.

Taking Dukling Chinese Junk Boat is not only a rare opportunity to ride aboard on the last authentic Chinese sailing junk but probably the most authentic and memorable way to enjoy Victoria Harbour and the skyline. Drifting on the water with this special harbour tour will bring you back to the past and you can almost feel the local history of traders, taipans, fishermen and colonial history.

Star Ferry
The historic harbour ride, more than transportation

Taking the iconic Star Ferry is actually a no-brainer. It’s the cheapest way to cross the harbour in town. Even you don’t have time for a 45-minute boat tour. I would highly recommend taking it at least once during your stay.

There are two different tours/rides: traditional ride and Harbour Tour/Water Tour (around Victoria Harbour)

Star Ferry Harbour Cruise

Star Ferry Harbour Cruise

Crossing harbour ride – Must-Do

Strictly speaking, taking a short ride on Star Ferry is not a Harbour Tour in the classical sense where you have a tour guide explaining everything and even getting some refreshments.

As classical public transport, it is much more than that. Locals and tourists both enjoy to use this as a boat tour.

It is appealing also due to the unbeatable ticket price (HK$ 5 on weekdays and HK$ 6.5 on weekends/upper deck). You can either go from Tsim Sha Tsui to Wan Chai or Central and vice versa.

The only drawback is that the journey only lasts 8-10 minutes. However, for those who don’t have enough time for a one-hour boat tour or are afraid of staying on water too long, it is a great compromise.

TLDR: Conclusion and easy solution – Which one is the best harbour tour?

Which harbour tour is suitable for you? Which one is the best?

All the above harbour tours are the best selections in Hong Kong. Basically, all of them provide similar Day, Night and Laser Show Tours. Which one is the best is depending on your own preferences.

  • If you would like to enjoy the atmosphere of heritage junk boat, then Aqua Luna and Dukling are obviously the best options. Both operators offer 45-min ride. Aqua Luna is more expensive but sails daily. Dukling only operates on weekends.

  • If you don’t care about the vessel type or you travel on limited budget, Watertours Boat Trip, Star Ferry and Water Taxi may be your right option. They are almost only half the price of Aqua Luna. What’s more, the sail of Watertours takes 75 minutes, much longer than other tour operators (others usually offer only 45 minute – 1 hour tour).

  • If you would love to feel the history of Hong Kong and try to historic public transport, Star Ferry is an easy decision, which is spacious and also the cheapest of all after discount.

  • If you would like to have a meal on board, you can take a closer look of Aqua Luna, Bauhinia Cruise and Bauhinia Cruise. Both of them offer afternoon tea or delicious buffet. In the meanwhile, Aqua Luna carries the package with dinner after water tour in the luxury restaurant Hutong.

  • If you dislike being together with too many other passengers, the luxury yacht is a good choice.

Which time of the harbour tour or boat tour is the best?

Basically, every tour operators offer early evening (sunset) and A Symphony of Lights tours. These are the two mostly booked boat rides.

  • A Symphony of Lights boat tour – the most popular option for visitors are definitely the ride during A Symphony of Lights. You can watch the laser show and lighting landmarks of both sides of Victoria Harbour.

  • The sunset cruise – another hot choice is the late afternoon/early evening boat tour, which usually starts in the late afternoon (17:00-18:00). The passengers will have opportunities to experience Hong Kong’s picturesque city skyline changing from bright blue to the glittering lights after dark.
