Due to Hong Kong’s geographical location (Hong Kong’s latitude is similar to Hawaii, Havana or Calcutta) temperatures have a wide range. Climate is subtropical and summers are hot, humid and wet while winters are dry and cool. On average temperatures will range between 25-35 °C in summer and between 14-19 °C in winter. Please note and be aware that during the months of May-November you need to be prepared for the occasionally upcoming typhoon in this region. Be prepared that weather can change quickly and it’s a good advice to take an umbrella or jacket with you – just in case.

The transition to summer comes usually very fast and the months from June to mid-September are usually the hottest and humid ones. Expect temperatures from 28-35°C (even at night) and humidity levels higher than 85%. The humidity is sometimes so high that you will see the condensate running down the walls or dripping from the ceiling. Be careful when you walk on tiles, they can be very slippery. Usually, you can see the sun reflecting on the floor and can see how wet the floor is. The months of May, June and July are usually the “wettest” months in Hong Kong. Furthermore, it is a good idea to take a baseball-cap, hat or umbrella with you to protect and shield you against the intense UV light and sunshine.

Autumn (mid/end September – beginning of December) is usually the best time to travel to Hong Kong. Temperatures are not as hot as in summer and range between 18-28°C and humidity drops to somewhere around 70% which make the air feel dry and comfortable compared to the previous months. You can expect sunny and mostly dry days and have a good chance to enjoy Hong Kong and its sightseeing attractions without too much sweat and exhaustion.

From mid December till the end of February, winter arrives in Hong Kong. Due to the wind chill factor you can experience cold and chilly days especially, when temperatures drop from 20°C to about 10°C overnight. It can occasionally get quite cold and chilly. People asked me, if it snows in Hong Kong. I have been living here for several years now, but I didn’t see any snow or experience any snowfall, yet. I did some research and it’s hard to believe since Hong Kong’s geographical location is close to the equator. But there have been four reported cases where it actual snowed in Hong Kong during 1967-1975.
