Before this Gudetama Café by Izumi Curry opened, Hong Kong has already had many character themed cafés and restaurants. Hello Kitty Secret Garden Café, Hello Kitty Chinese Cuisine, Kumamon Pop-up Restaurant and Pom-Pom Purin Café are all very popular.
Do you know Gudetama ?
Gudetama or also known as “lazy egg” is one of Sanrio’s recent additions to its character lines. Due to its lazy personality and cute voice, it is very popular in Hong Kong now. You can find him almost everywhere. Be it plush, stationary, clothing and cell phone accessories. It was just a question of time when the first themed Gudetama restaurant would open in Hong Kong.
Gudetama Café Designed by Izumi Curry
After the huge success of pop-up Kumamon Café, Izumi Curry and Japanese Department store YATA teamed up once again. The new pop-up Gudetama Café was opened on October 4, 2015 only several days after Kumamon Café was closed.
Gudetama Café by Izumi Curry is designed in the typical egg-yolk yellow and white colors. The walls have been decorated with large Gudetama wallpapers. Tables, tablewares, counters and even chairs have been designed around the cute lazy egg.
Gudetama Food Designs
The menu is all inspired by and themed with Gudetama. You have a wide variety to sample some special designed food and dishes such as curry, ramen, udon and salads. Like other pop-up cafés and restaurants, the prices are a little bit higher. However, this time Izumi Curry focused on main dishes rather than desserts. You are able to get some decent Japanese and fusion style dishes.
The entrance of YATA is adjacent to Gudetama Café. There is a large display of Gudetama merchandise. All kind of special products including T-shirts, bags, cushions, plush toys, cell phone accessories and stationaries are available.
“As one of the most popular Sanrio characters in Hong Kong, Gudetama is a trend for the locals. Eating in Gudetama Café will no doubt be one must do for many people. Thus be prepared for long waiting time.”
