Hong Kong’s recently opened up many themed restaurants including Hello Kitty Secret Garden and several pop-up restaurants (e.g. such as My Melody & Kuromi Pop-Up Café, Little Twin Stars or the Hello Kitty x Iroha Ramen pop-up store).

I was so excited to hear that the Japanese Department Store YATA and apm shopping mall decided to team up and open a pop-up café with the super cute and adorable Kumamon bear.

In case you don’t know who Kumamon is: Kumamon is actually the official mascot of the Kumamoto prefecture in Japan. The cute and adorable black bear won not only the hearts of Japanese, but soon gain popularity and spread his cuteness to other Asian countries including Hong Kong. As a matter of fact, Hong Kong loves the little bear and got crazy when the first pop-up store opened up last year in one of YATAs department stores in Tsuen Wan.

This time YATA decided to team up with Izumi Kitchen to bring the Kumamon Pop-Up Café to the apm shopping mall. When you arrive at the little restaurant you will immediately notice Kumamon dressed up as a chef.

The design of the Kumamoto Café is rather minimalistic and clean. There are a few posters and pictures of Kumamon on the wall. However, no need to worry. There are plenty of photo opportunities.  I love the Kumamon Café by YATA and Izumi Kitchen better than the Hello Kitty Secret Garden Café in designing their food and experience.

Although, the Kumamon Pop-Up Café is focusing more on desserts and drinks you will be able to get some super cute dishes featuring Kumamon. The food price in Kumamon Cafe is a little expensive than than normal restaurant. Considering they need to pay for the copyright, it’s acceptable.

Since it’s a very small but popular restaurant, customers are requested to finish within 90 minutes.

Just next to the Kumamon Pop-Up Café is a large display of Kumamon merchandise. Needless to say that there are tons of cute Kumamon related merchandise products ranging from T-Shirts, cups, cell phone accessories to plush toys and stationery. In case you really love Kumamon you should check out YATA as well. YATA has a small section with Kumamon related food items including cookies, donuts, water, sake and wine.

Last but not least, I would like to point out that there is a little Kumamon Square featuring a small exhibition of Kumamon products and a special designed Kumamon Bar. It is also a great opportunity to take some photos with the cute little bear from Japan. The Kumamon Square is located just next to the Kumamon Pop-Up Café.
