Famous Belgian chocolatier Leonidas teamed up with Sanrio and opened a themed Pom Pom Purin (pudding dog) Pop-Up Café in Hong Kong.

It is part of the Metro City Plaza x Pompompurin Christmas Exhibition 2014 and is to celebrate the cute little golden retriever’s first major Christmas arrangement and appearance in one of Hong Kong’s shopping malls.

As a themed restaurant, it is expected that they will serve some special designed Pom Pom Purin dishes, coffees and desserts.

The themed pop-up café is rather small and roughly 20 people can be seated (typical Hong Kong). Since I went to the restaurant during the week days, I was lucky and didn’t need to wait too long to get my place.

The Leonidas Café is very small

From my past unhappy and disappointed experience in the themed restaurants in Hong Kong, (Charlie Brown Café, Hello Kitty Le Petit Café, Hello Kitty Secret Garden Café, Kumamon Café,  I wasn’t expecting too much on the food quality and taste. The only thing I cared about was how cute the food would be.

Taking a look at the flyer in front of the entrance I felt already disappointed. You have only three dining options : a tiramisu style pudding cake (priced at HK$ 68), pancakes with a Pom Pom Purin face (priced at HK$ 68) or a Pom Pom Purin style Caesar salad (HK$ 58) which had pudding dog’s face on a piece of toast. None of them were served with the Pom Pom Purin culinary. However, to be fair there will additional sets during the Christmas holidays (December 24 – 26) including a Pom Pom Purin High Tea Set for HK$ 388.

Only 3 options for food

Each of these dishes have being limited to 30 pieces per day and the most popular one was the Pom Pom Purin style tiramisu cake since it sold out the first (totally understandable since the other two options could be easily done in your own kitchen and were over-charged). The drink menu didn’t offer too many options either. You either could choose a café latte (HK$ 37), cappuccino (HK$ 37) or café mocha (HK$ 41) with the latte art of Pom Pom Purin’s face.

I finally chose the tiramisu style pudding cake and a cup of cappuccino since they looked cutest. Remember to request the mug if you don’t want to be served with the paper cup.

Pudding and Cappuccino

The coffee was nicely prepared and quickly served. The latte art on the cappuccino was a delicate Pom Pom Purin Santa. I must admit that the barista team did a much better job than the Hello Kitty Le Petit Café staff.

The tiramisu pudding cake also looked adorable and I could see that the restaurant took some time on the food garnishment.

It’s cute but expensive

The white chocolate was not delicious and the fruit was not fresh

However, the look of the food is one thing and the taste of the food is another.  Both the taste and quality of the pudding and coffee was more than disappointing (especially considering how much you paid). The tiramisu cake was totally wet inside and tasted strange (one of the worst tiramisu cake I had in Hong Kong).

Besides what I ordered, you also can try their Pom Pom Purin pancake and vanilla icecream set. Will you be happy to pay HK$ 68 for this ?

Is it worthwhile visiting the Pom Pom Purin Pop-Up Café in Hong Kong?

MCP shopping mall is located far from the downtown area (Po Lam MTR station) and it will take you over 1 hour to travel there. MCP shopping mall also has a Pom Pom Purin themed exhibition with a souvenir store right next to the Pom Pom Purin pop-up café. Unless you are a die-hard Pom Pom Purin fan and already visiting the MCP shopping mall, I would say to skip this pop-up café and spend your money on some Pom Pom Purin souvenirs.
