The first overseas themed Moomin Bakery & Café finally opened in Hong Kong at the LCX Shopping Mall on December 5, 2014. If you are looking for a special place to dine and enjoy some delicious desserts this might be worthwhile to take a closer look, especially when you are a Moomin & Friends fan or have children to take care of.

At the same time, Hong Kong LCX shopping mall hosted a special LCX x Moomin “The Adventure Christmas” exhibition to celebrate the festival.

Moomin Bakery & Café Opens in Hong Kong

It is not only in recent months that Hong Kong’s restaurant environment saw quite a bit of themed restaurants and cafés. We will keep updating new restaurants and you can keep an eye on our article about Hong Kong’s Special Character Themed Restaurants for the latest news.

Celebration of Tove Jansson’s 100th Birthday

This time, the Moomin Bakery & Café is centered around the popular Finish cartoon character Moomin and Friends and opened right on time to commemorate the 100th birthday of Tove Jansson (the writer and illustrator of this cute little hippo style looking troll and family).

You are able to meet Moominpappa, Moomimmamma, Moomin, Hemulens, Sniff, Snork Maiden, Snork, Snufkin and many other popular characters of this cartoon series. Did you know that the Moomin Bakery & Café Hong Kong is the first overseas restaurant aside from the ones in Tokyo. There is one at Tokyo Dome City and another one at Tokyo Skytree Town as well as the Moomin Bakery & Café Canal City Hakata in Fukuoka.

Cartoon Book Interior Designs

The Moomin Bakery & Café interior design is held in the typical flavor of the cartoon books and series. It reminds strongly of the Scandinavian background of Tove Jansson.

Already the entrance of the restaurant reminded me at one of the typical housing styles found in Finland and the rest of Scandinavia. Wood style furniture inside, stylish wallpapers, white birches and of course many decorations featuring Moomin and his friends.

As all the themed restaurant, the Moomin Bakery & Café is offering special dishes and drinks featuring Moomin characters. Dishes include Moomin Style Hot Pancakes (around HK$ 138), homemade cheesecake (HK$ 88), Finish style stewed beef (around HK$ 130), Pan-fried Salmon (around HK$ 130) as well as special designed Moomin Latte and Coffees for around HK$ 50. There is also one special dish dedicated to Tove Jansson called Jansson’s Temptation and I have no doubt that this European style restaurant will be very popular in Hong Kong, not only due to the Moomin characters.

  • “The prices on menu are relatively higher than other restaurants of the same level in Hong Kong. Considering it’s a themed restaurant that needs to cope with licence and renovation expense, it’s somehow acceptable.”
