(Update: Please note that the outlets have been moved out of Pedder Building. At present, Abercrombie & Fitch has occupied the first three floors of Pedder Buiding, while the remaining floors are mainy galleries and studios.)

In the past, the Pedder Building has been known as one of the best spots in Hong Kong not only for fans of serious shopping, but also for architecture lovers and food gourmets. Shanghai Tang’s Flagship Store was located on the Ground Floor for almost 17 years as well as one of Hong Kong’s most famous restaurants the China Tee Club (founded by former Miss Hong Kong Loletta Chu). Unfortunately, both shops had to close due to rising rents in late 2011. The fashion giant Abercombie & Fitch announced to build up its first Flagship Store in Hong Kong and is scheduled to open in early August 2012.

However, in the past the Pedder Building’s reputation has been the (!) place (building) which houses several Factory Outlets on the upper floors (plus several clinics and doctors). Shoppers got crazy for discounted designer clothes from Anne Klein, Jones New York, Labels Plus or La Place (Chanel, Prada, YSL and/or Valentino). Although, they are approx. 30 stores on 5 floors many of these stores are not Factory Outlets in the original sense or by definition. Basically, they are small boutiques or designer outlets which sell the same products like other stores. However, there are still dozens of small stores selling cashmere, silk, garments, jewelries, accessories and even home decor. You are still able to get good bargains (30% or more off the suggested retail price) especially at the stores which sell last seasons or the so-called off-season fashions. But be aware some stores sell actually second-hands. Double-check the items (especially silk and cashmeres) carefully for defects and ask if the item is a new one or gently used.

In any case, Pedder Building is still some kind of institution and a fun place to look and shop around despite the lack of dozens true Factory Outlet Stores. And if that is not enough, you still can walk opposite the Pedder Building and visit The Landmark.
