Arrival procedures in Hong Kong Airport – What to do when you arrive?

For the Transit Passengers:

In case you have an onward flight and hold your flight tickets in hands, you don’t need to go through Immigration and Customs. Simply head to your next departure gate. Just make sure that you have sufficient transit time to catch your connecting flight (minimum connection time).

Time needed to clear Hong Kong Airport Immigration

How much time or how long it takes to clear Immigration and Customs at Hong Kong Airport?

The Immigration Control Points in HKIA opens 24 hours and are very efficient. You should be able to pass Immigration and Customs within approx. 45 – 60 minutes after the plane landed.

To be on the safe side, plan additional time during peak hours and public holidays (such as Easter, Christmas and especially during Chinese Public Holidays such as Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn and National Day). Check the Hong Kong Public Holidays to prepare and avoid peak days. Also, keep in mind that typhoons, thunderstorms and other incidents might effect your waiting time causing delays.

There are many ways getting the downtown area or hotel depending on your budget, time and preferences. Aside from the classic taxi and free shuttle buses of selected hotels, Hong Kong offers various other options to travel from the airport to the downtown area.

The MTR train departs every 10-15 minutes from 5:57am to 00:22am running from Lo Wu to Admiralty daily. You can easily travel further to Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon center or Hong Kong Island.

How to use Hong Kong MTR network?

When you pass the Customs, you will come to the East Railway MTR station. You can purchase the ticket from either the automatic ticket machine or the Customer Service Center. You also can consider to buy an Octopus card which is available in the Customer Service Center. There are three types of Octopus cards : Adult, Elder and Child card. Elder and Child Octopus has special discount. Octopus Card can make you travel in Hong Kong super convenient and smooth. On foot – around 5-minute walking distance

Similar to Lo Wu Control Point, the Futian Port and Lok Ma Chau Control Point are in two seperated buildings. Visitors need to pass Futian Port first and then walk further to Lok Ma Chau Control Point in Hong Kong. The walking distance from Shenzhen Immigration to Hong Kong Immigration is about 5-8 minutes.

Be aware: The Futian Port operates only from 6:30am till 10:30pm. If you cannot get to Futian Port before midnight, you will have to travel to Huanggang Port to cross the border. Futian Port and Huanggang Port is proximately 15-minute away by taxi.

How to travel to HK downtown from Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point

By MTR East Rail Way or public bus

The Lok Ma Chau Customs directly connects to the MTR East Rail Station. The easiest way for visitors to downtown area is to hop on the train and have a direct ride. The MTR train departs every 12-14 minutes from 6:38am to 10:55pm running from Lok Ma Chau station to Admiralty daily.

Alternatively, public bus B1 to Tin Shui Wai, minibus No.75 to Yuen Long and taxi are available. The last bus and minibus both depart at 10:55pm.

How to get to Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point (Hong Kong)?

The Futian Port is the terminal station of Shenzhen subway Line 4. Get off the subway at Futian station and you will easily spot the blue signs “To Hong Kong”. Just follow it to Hong Kong Immigration.

Shenzhen Lok Ma Chau and Lo Wu Customs are used by most people (most of the tourists and Hong Kong residents) to cross the border, because the transportation here is more convenient. Huanggang:
how to cross border to Hong Kong through Huanggang Port (Shenzhen)

Huanggang Port is the only port in Shenzhen that opens 24 hours. Thus it is the only channel traveling to Hong Kong from Shenzhen after midnight. However, most of the areas in-between of two Customs are restricted (cannot walk). After passing the Mainland China Customs, visitors will need to depend on the cross-border bus getting to the side of Hong Kong Customs. The bus ride takes around 5 minutes.

From Huanggang Shenzhen Customs to Hong Kong Customs

By cross-border bus – city bus and cross-border shuttle bus

The cross-border bus is the only way bring you from Shenzhen Customs to Hong Kong Customs. It includes the short-haul cross-border coaches and 24-hour shuttle bus. The former travel from Customs to downtown areas, while the latter bring passengers from Customs to San Tin Public Transport Interchange.

How to take cross-border bus:

  1. Pass the Shenzhen Customs first and step out of the Immigration building;
  2. Find the large parking area with signs of various district of Hong Kong. Choose the bus according to your destination; To directly transfer to downtown area can take the short-hall cross border coach. To transfer public bus to downtown, then choose the cross-border shuttle bus to the Public Interchange.
  3. The coaches or buses will bring all the passengers directly to Hong Kong Customs;
  4. Get off the bus and pass the Hong Kong Customs;
  5. Then hop on the coaches again and continue the journey.

  • Crossing border via Huanggang Port is a bit more complicated for visitors, especially the first time visitors. Unless you need to cross the border between midnight and 6:30am, I would not recommend Huanggang Port as the first choice. Luohu Port and Futian Port are much more convenient.

Shenzhen Bay Port is a joint checkpoint, meaning both Mainland China Immigration and Hong Kong Immigration are in the same building. Visitors can cross the border without trouble walking/traveling between two Customs. The Shenzhen Bay Port opens from 6:30am to midnight.

How to travel to HK downtown from Shenzhen Bay Port

By port transfer coach, public bus and taxi

The port transfer coach operated by Chinalink travels from Shenzhen Bay to New Territories and Kowloon of Hong Kong downtown. The en-route stops include Sheung Wan, Wong Tai Sin, Tsim Sha Tsui, Prince Edward, Kwun Tong, Tseung Kwan O, Tsuen Wan and Tai Wai. Ticket price is at HK$ 50 – 65 (depend on travel distance). The coach operates from 7:20am – 8:45pm daily (details of Shenzhen Bay-Hong Kong Bus & book ticket).

If you plan to head to Yuen Long, Tin Shui Wai or Tuen Mun public bus B2 and B2P can be your economical options.

How to get to Shenzhen Bay Port (Shenzhen)

For the moment, there is not subway station near Shenzhen Bay Port in Shenzhen. News reported that the subway network (Line 13) will extend to Shenzhen Bay in 2024. Before that, visitors will have to use public bus or taxi to get to Shenzhen Bay Port.

The nearest subway station is “Hou Hai” (Line 2 and Line 11). From there you can take Tour Bus No.9 (3 stops) or pick a taxi to the port.

Heung Yuen Wai:
how to cross border to Heung Yuen Wai Control Point from Shenzhen

Heung Yuen Wai Control Point is a new checkpoint allowing individual visitors to Hong Kong (since Feb 2021). It connects with Liantang Port in Shenzhen with walking distance. Both checkpoints open from 7:00am to 10:00pm daily.

From Liantang Port (Shenzhen) to Heung Yuen Wai Control Point

On foot – around 5-minute walking distance

Similar to other control points, the Liantang Port and Heung Yuen Wai Checkpoint are in two separated buildings. It take approximately 15-20 minutes for visitors to clear both Immigration and Customs (including walking time).

How to travel to HK downtown from Heung Yuen Wai Control Point

By port transfer coach or public bus

The port transfer coaches are waiting at 1/F floor. The port transfer coach operated by Eternal East Bus runs between the Heung Yuen Wai Checkpoint to several locations in downtown. You can easily continue your journey from Hong Kong border to Mongkok, Yau Ma Tei, Tsim Sha Tsui and Shatin. Ticket price is at HK$ 40 and the coach operates from 3:45pm – 8:15pm daily (details of Liantang – Hong Kong Bus & book ticket).

Alternatively, get to G/F and you will find public bus B7, B8 and B9 heading to Sheung Shui, Tai Wai and Tuen Mun respectively.

How to get to Liantang Port (Shenzhen)

Liantang Port in Shenzhen is not in the network of Shenzhen subway. Thus the only way getting there are either by bus or by taxi.

West Kowloon Checkpoint and Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint are much easier as they are running the joint checkpoints. It means both Mainland China and Hong Kong Immigration are in the same building that visitors can easily get through the border without trouble to different location.

Arrival procedures in ferry terminals – What to do when you travel to Hong Kong from Macau by ferry?

If you arrive by any ferry from Macau to Hong Kong, you have to go through Immigration and Customs. The procedure is as easy as in the airport. The Hong Kong Immigration and Customs is right inside the ferry terminal building close to the exit of ferry.

An exception is SkyPier Terminal, the ferry pier located at the Hong Kong International Airport. The SkyPier Terminal is for transit passengers holding a valid flight ticket for a same day onward flight.

Arrival by Bus from Macau / Zhuhai

The opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge in 2018 gives another travel and arrival option to Hong Kong.

The second cruise ship terminal is located at the former location of the Kai Tak Airport and is called Kai Tak Terminal. It is very far away from the downtown area and inconvenient located. How to pass West Kowloon Immigration?

No matter if you arrive or depart in Hong Kong, you have to go and complete both Hong Kong and Mainland China Immigration and Customs clearance.

The West Kowloon Immigration and Customs runs joint checkpoints. All you need to do is to hop on the train and get off in West Kowloon. The West Kowloon checkpoints open 24 hours.

Usually, the High Speed Trains arrive at Level B4. Then take the escalators up to Level B2. Here you have to complete the one-time immigration formalities. First you go through Mainland China Immigration and Customs. Then you have to do the same for Hong Kong Immigration and Customs.

Hong Kong and China Immigration and Customs

In China Customs, there are Automated Passenger Clearance System (for multiple-entry permit holders only) and counter-service. You need to prepare to stand in line for a long time.

Hong Kong Customs also has both E-Channel (for Hong Kong residents and Frequent Visitors) and counter-service. Simply look for the sign “Immigration Counter” and show your passport or Hong Kong pass. The duration of stay is related with your travel documents.

Usually, the arrival cards will also be distributed on the flight. But if you miss out or made a mistake when filling out there is no need to worry. There are enough forms right in front the immigration.

For those who love to collect stamps in their passports, Hong Kong Immigration (as well as Macau) ended the passport stamping several years ago. Now you will get a printed landing slip. Make sure to hang on to this and don’t lose it.
