In general, the buses are very modern (double-decker bus), clean, well-maintained and most importantly for visitors who are not used to the hot and humid weather equipped with air-condition (you will still be able to find some old-fashioned buses without air-condition in operation. Locals often lovingly refer to them as the “hot-dog” bus).

Using the bus:

Fares are based on a flat rate basis no matter how far you travel (the fare for one station is the same as if you take some more stations) and paid in front at the driver. When entering the bus you either simply swipe your Octopus card over the Octopus Card Reader or tender the driver the exact change into the coin box directly next him. Important: the driver has no change, so if you overpay him there will be no change or refund.

To get off you need to push the bell (in some buses indicated through red buttons, in others hidden in the ceiling with a small remark to “push here”) to let the driver know that you would like to get off at the next station. Stations are indicated by sound as well through a LED screen in English as well as Chinese. Furthermore, many of the buses are equipped with small LCD screens, which show commercials, news or some entertainment. For all the people who are constantly on the run and need Wi-Fi – there are a few buses equipped with Wi-Fi access (such as some of the airport buses).

Important note for people taller than 1.90m: Bus can be very crowded in peak hours and people squeeze in and occupy the last square inch of room. It can be quite tiring to stand – since the ceiling height of the bus are very low and you have no head space.
