Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations including New Year’s Eve Fireworks is always one of the most popular public events and highlights in Hong Kong.
Aside from the plenty of options to party, Hong Kong New Year countdown celebration and New Year’s Eve Fireworks show are the most anticipated event at the end of the year. Locals and international visitors have been anticipating this event to welcome the New Year 2016 with a big bang.
What can you see from Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations 2016 ?
This time the theme of New Year’s Eve Fireworks is called “Love and Joy”. Similar to last year’s event, the iconic Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) will be the focal point. A large LED billboard will light up with the words “2016” and New Year greetings in multiple languages. New Year’s Eve Fireworks schedule is divided into two parts. The first part is called “Wish Upon a Star” while the second one if the official New Year’s Eve Countdown and Fireworks show.
Wish Upon a Star
The Hong Kong New Year Countdown will be starting from 11:00pm onwards with the “Wish Upon a Star” fireworks show. Special designed fireworks will be launched in 15 minutes intervals from the rooftops of seven Hong Kong’s most iconic skyscrapers (including the Cheung Kong Centre, CITIC Tower, Harbour Centre, Hartcourt House, HSBC Headquarters Building, Queensway Government Offices and Revenue Tower).
Each of the wishing stars fireworks will represent one specific good wish for the New Year such as career, health, wealth, fortune or love. Make sure to look up in the sky. If you spot the special stars, don’t forget to make a wish for 2016!
New Year’s Eve Fireworks
The New Year’s Eve Fireworks will officially start when the hour strikes midnight. Similar to past events, the fireworks will be launched from barges on Victoria Harbour. Look out for over 160 Smiley Faces and heart-shaped fireworks above Victoria Harbour.
You can be assured that the 8 minutes fireworks show will be one Extravaganza show (the HKTB spent around 13 million HK Dollar for this year’s event) covering over 1 km of Victoria Harbour stretching from Central to Causeway Bay.
The best ways to experience the Hong Kong New Year Countdown Fireworks ?

Since the fireworks will be launched from barges on Victoria Harbour, the best vantage points to enjoy the fireworks are along Victoria Harbour in Tsim Sha Tsui, Central and of course in Wan Chai.
Usually, the TST waterfront promenade including the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza as well as the Avenue of Stars are one of the best places to enjoy the show. Having said that, be prepared that this vantage spot will fill quickly and will be very crowded. Keep in mind the fireworks schedule and prepare plenty of time to travel to and from TST.
