    Insider Tips and Final Thoughts

The Sevens are not only a rugby tournament. It is one legendary big party event. Below we compiled some additional useful tips not only for first-time visitors. Have some fun, enjoy the matches and keep safe.

What do you wear to the rugby 7s?

Although, the Kai Tak Stadium has a retractable roof, it is always wise to prepare for weather changes. So, prepare for the good and also for the bad weather. Don’t forget sunglasses, sunblock and a rain jacket. It is also a good idea to bring some wet tissue and hand sanitiser along. Make sure to wear some comfortable clothes and closed shoes. Depending which stand or section you are sitting in, it can get wild (south stand). Similar to European soccer matches, fans shout, sing and cheer for their team. Prepare for spilled food, drinks and unexpected beer showers.

Similar to soccer, American football or baseball, fans like to dress up in their favourite team jerseys. But the Hong Kong Sevens are more than that. Plenty of fans take the opportunity and dress up in all kind of funny, weird and strange costumes. It’s a combination of Halloween, Cosplay, carnival, festival and open-air party.

Didn’t get tickets? Where to watch the games

In case you couldn’t get your hands on one of the precious Hong Kong Sevens tickets, there are still plenty of options to enjoy the games. So, don’t worry.

In the past, the HK Sevens opened up a FanZone, FanWalk or Sevens Village close to the Stadium. Here you can watch and enjoy a live rugby broadcast on large outdoor LED screens. Besides that you have a chance to win prizes, free gifts and even meet some of the rugby legends. And if that is not enough there will be plenty of e.g. street performers, entertainers, celebrity appearances and food and drinks. Previous FanZone events had a strong lineup of international top music stars and performers.

HK 7s Hong Kong Sevens Fan Zone at the Central waterfront promenade

HK 7s Fan Zone with the skyline as the backdrop

In case the FanZone or FanWalk is already too crowded or if it is pouring cats and dogs, you can head to Causeway Bay, Wan Chai or Lan Kwai Fong. There are several pubs and sport bars where you can enjoy the live coverage of the games. Lan Kwai Fong as well as Wan Chai are the prime areas to continue the partying after the final whistle of the last game.

Where are the best seats to watch the games?

The stadium has 4 stands/tribunes (north, east, south and west). Families and die-hard rugby fans usually choose the east and west stands. The south stand is where the action is. So choose your stand wisely.

Other insider tips for HK 7s

“The stadium has plenty of food stands, drinks and snacks. However, prepare for mediocre food with a high price tag. Having said that it is highly recommended to fill your stomach before heading to the stadium or make use of the re-entry gate.”

“Prepare that it will get very crowded. Saturday and Sunday are the peak times due to the final matches and entertainment concerts. Long lines and queuing are the norm. No matter for entrance, re-entry, food or drinks. Having said that it is a good idea to plan ahead and arrive as early as possible.”
