Rich History of the Cross-Harbour Race
The cross-harbour can look back to a long and rich history. It is hard to believe, but the event has over 100 years of history. The legendary Cross Harbour Race was first held in 1906 under British Colonial Rule. One of the main ideas behind the spectacle was to promote water sports in Hong Kong. Over the years, the race evolved into a prestigious event. It was one Hong Kong’s most celebrated events for over 70 years. Hundreds of participants and thousands of spectators had been attracted by this unique race across Victoria Harbour. Among swimmers the event had an iconic and legendary status. Where else could you enjoy swimming with such a magnificent backdrop of Hong Kong’s skyline and mountains?
Swim athletes waiting for their starting block
Unfortunately, the race was halted due to pollution concerns of the water (raw sewage, detritus, rubbish as well as an increase of the maritime sea traffic) in the late 1970s. So, from 1978 onwards, the popular annual tradition has been stopped for many years. After a 33-year absence, the Harbour Race had been revived in 2012.
