Other attractions on Lantau Island remain open during closure

If your major purpose of visiting Lantau Island is Big Buddha, don’t worry. Both Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery will still open.

Besides, the attractions around and at the themed Ngong Ping Village including Wisdom Path, Cable Car Discovery Centre and Motion 360 remain unaffected. The past Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car maintenance closure

It is not Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car’s first maintenance closure. In the previous years, there have been many yearly checks and unexpected closures from time to time. Usually, the maintenance period will last only about two days and Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car will not be in operation. We include the previous information here in case you are interested to know. In general, the planned maintenance will be in January, March, April, September and December, unless some unexpected accidence happens.

In 2021, Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car has scheduled altogether 5 times maintenance closure.

2. February 27 to March 22, 2021
3. May 10 to 13, 2021
4. September 13 to 15, 2021
5. November 16 and 17, 2021

In 2020, Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car has scheduled altogether only 3 times maintenance closure, mainly due to impact of pandemic.

In 2019, Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car has scheduled altogether 5 times maintenance closure:

In 2018, Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car has scheduled altogether 5 times maintenance closure:

In 2017, Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car maintenance closure started from January 9 for rope replacement and maintenance project. The service was suspended completely during the scheduled maintenance period.

In the past years, Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car went through lots of unexpected accidents. Since it has been operating for 10 years, it was necessary to replace the rope on the bi-cable ropeway of the cable car attraction. As a very big project, the rope replacement project took place in the first half year of 2017 to avoid Hong Kong’s typhoon season. It was finished on the 5th of June 2017.

The Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car will be completely closed during these scheduled maintenance periods.

In 2015, Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car has scheduled altogether 5 times maintenance closure:

1. January 27 and 28, 2015
2. March 13 to 19, 2015
3. April 30 ­to May 12, 2015
4. September 7 to 24, 2015
5. December 2 to 5, 2015

The Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car will be completely closed during these scheduled maintenance periods.

There were five time Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car maintenance closure in 2014:

1. January 14 to 16, 2014
2. March 17 to 20, 2014
3. June 24 and 25, 2014
4. September 16 to 23, 2014
5. December 2 and 3, 2014

The Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car will be completely closed during these scheduled maintenance periods.

As always, during the closure period, the cable car will completely stop service.

In 2013, besides regular maintenance check, Ngong Ping 360 management decided to take a proactive approach and take precautious measures and added two additional maintenance programs to their regular maintenance schedule.

The first added additional maintenance program took place in March 2013.In order to maintain and ensure the overall safety of cable car ride, the company decided to replace the system’s haul ropes and shut down its operation for at least one week in March 2013.

The second closure took place at the beginning of September 2013. Experts from Europe carried out comprehensive checks on the complete cable car system as well as the shifting of the track rope for the entire system.

In addition, the Monkey’s Tale Theatre (now is permanently closed) in the Ngong Ping Village was closed as well. The Monkey’s Tale Theatre will went through renovation and refurbishment. Some value-added and brand new attractions were expected to come in later of that year. Other attractions were kept opening during the three-week Ngong Ping 360 Cable Care closure.

Year 2013 altogether Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car went through five time scheduled maintenance closure:

1. January 30 and 31, 2013
2. March 13 to 20, 2013
3. June 26 and 27, 2013
4. September 2 to 23, 2013
5. December 4 and 5, 2013

Unless it is particularly specified, during the closure period, the cable car will completely stop service.

Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car had a rough start at the beginning of 2012. On the 5th of January 2012, a stoppage incident of ropeway made more than 800 passengers trapped in the hanging Ngong Ping 360 Cable Cars for more than 90 minutes. This incidence was the fourth malfunction in 6 weeks. Due to this incidence, Ngong Ping 360 planned to carry an unexpected 10-day maintenance. However in the end the suspension was extended till the 5th of April 2012 . The incidence was so serious that the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of Hong Kong also conducted an independent investigation.

Here are the five Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car maintenance closure schedule in 2012:

1. January 26 to February 5, 2012 (unexpected suspension due to malfunction)
2. March 13 – 20, 2013
3. June 26 and 27, 2012
4. September 17 to 21, 2012
5. December 5 and 6, 2012

Unless it is particularly specified, during the closure period, the cable car will completely stop service.

From May 23rd, 2011, the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car service was temporarily suspended for the period of about one month for ropeway maintenance.

The themed Ngong Ping Village (including Po Lin Monastery, Big Buddha, Wisdom Path, the multimedia theaters as well as other attractions) remained open as usual, but the Cable Car ride was closed for the scheduled maintenance works as well as for the annual examination of the complete Cable Car system (including the ropes). Ngong Ping 360 could not announce a date of resumption of the service at the beginning. The above-mentioned period is scheduled according to the latest information and maintenance program and is subject to change in accordance with unforeseeable circumstances (such as bad weather conditions).

In order to compensate for the inconvenience caused during the duration of the closure, Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car as well as the New Lantao Bus Company offered some special incentives. Visitors who purchased a “Lantau Pass” had the chance to purchase tickets for the multimedia theatre “Walking with Buddha” or “Monkey’s Tale Theatre” for just HK$ 1. The “Lantau Pass” allowed passengers to have unlimited Lantau rides. The pass cost HK$ 35 from Monday to Saturdays and HK$ 55 on Sundays and Public Holidays.

In addition, visitors who spent above HK$ 100 at Ngong Ping Village had the chance to redeem a free MTR single-journey ticket and a gift worth over HK$ 50 from Ngong Ping 360. This MTR ticket could be used from the Tung Chung station to almost any other MTR station in Hong Kong (stations excluded are the MTR Light Rail, MTR Bus, the Airport Express as well as the MTR border stations at Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau).
