The super popular Japanese characters KOBITOS are coming to Hong Kong this summer. Windsor House, LaForet and Causeway Place will host a special KOBITOS Summer Exhibition until August 31, 2014.

For most of people who don’t know about KOBITOS, the first thought comes to mind usually is “What are these ugly things ?” “How can they get so popular in Asia ?”

Actually, KOBITOS are originally from the book “The Illustrated Book of KOBITOS” by the Japanese children-book illustrator Toshitaka Nabata. It’s about a young boy who finds a mysterious creature that isn’t a plant or bug, but rather some kind of mystic spirit housing in plants, trees and mushrooms – KOBITOS.

This book became quite successful in Japan and caught on in several Asian countries including Taiwan and Hong Kong. Hence, it is no wonder that Toshitaka Nabata released the follow-up books “The Encyclopedia of KOBITOS” (2008) and “Introduction to Observing KOBITOS” (2010).

These years the KOBITOS became a very hot topic in Hong Kong and you can easily find many merchandise products in shops.

This summer KOBITOS finally made their first Hong Kong trip and set up an exhibition for their fans (I have to admit I am more of a fan for the Windsor House’s former “Hello Kitty 40th Anniversary Exhibition“).

Similar to the Hello Kitty 40th Anniversary Exhibition in Windsor House last three months, the KOBITOS exhibition is also relatively small. If you are their fans, you probably will get very excited to take photos with those famous characters of KOBITOS and some 3D setups.

One of the stars of the Windsor House X KOBITOS Summer Farm Exhibition is the Hiding Peach Bottom KOBITOS and he (or she ?) is one of most popular merchandises.

The Red Mushroom KOBITOS lives deep in the woods hiding away with his mushroom friends and taking his time to grow quietly.

The Little Flower Head KOBITOS can usually be found in wet grassy areas.

The Dapple Leaf Big KOBITOS lives in green grassy areas with good sunlight. His facial expression reminded me quite a bit of the famous painting The Scream by Edvard Munch.

Don’t want to go home with empty hands? There is a small pop-up store selling KOBITOS items and merchandise ranging from stationaries to toys.

Last but not least, if you are a fan of the KOBITOS and can’t get enough than you should head over to the LaForet and Causeway Place shopping malls. Both feature the KOBITOS as well.

If you visit Causeway Bay before the 20th of July, you also can consider the Batman 75th Anniversary Exhibition in Times Square, which is in the close vicinity.
