Starting from the 9th of October 2012, the Hong Kong MTR Corporation will impose a maximum weight limitation of 32 kg for passenger luggage.

The trial scheme will be implemented for the next three month and only affects the East Rail MTR Line. Scales will be placed near the wide gates to check the weight of the luggage at the busiest stations of Sheung Shui, Fanling, Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau. Overweight luggage will not allowed to aboard. It is expected that the weighting process will not affect the overall passenger flow and will only take a few seconds.

This drastic trail scheme was necessary due to overweight luggage (exceeding 70-80kg per passengers), which represented a hazard to other travelers and passengers. Besides, the total dimensions (length + width + height) should not exceed 170cm and any one side of the luggage should not exceed 130cm. Posters have been put up along the MTR lines to remind passengers of this new regulation.

In order to better safeguard its customers, the MTR Corporation decided to implement this three-month trial. At present, it remains unclear if and when the new weight limitation for passenger luggage will go in effect for the complete MTR network. We will keep you updated.
