Starting from October 20, 2013 the MTR Corporation will upgrade their Single Journey ticket system and introduces new Smart Single Journey tickets. The new Smart Single Journey tickets will work similar to the Octopus Card where you just need to touch the Octopus Processor when passing through the gate and go – a quick and easy way to enter the paid area of the MTR. When exiting the paid area of the MTR stations simply insert the Smart Single Journey ticket into the ticket slot as usual and pass the exit gates.

In addition, the MTR Corporation upgraded their entry and exit gates with a special wrapping. All gates compatible with the new Smart Single Journey tickets are wrapped in blue colour for easier identification. In addition, Smart Ticket Ambassadors dressed in blue will help and assist passengers at the MTR stations.

Advantages of the new Smart Single Journey ticket aside providing a more hassle free and convenient travel journey on the MTR are that these Smart Single Journey tickets are more durable and reliable. In addition, passengers can use the enquiry machines inside the MTR stations to check the information about ticket fare, validity and other details.

The first MTR station to offer the new MTR Smart Single Journey tickets will be the Olympic Station on the Tung Chung Line. Eight additional MTR station will follow to issue and use the new MTR Smart Single Journey tickets including Kam Sheung Road (West Rail Line), Heng Fa Chuen (Island Line), Tai Wo Hau (Tsuen Wan Line), LOHAS Park (Tseung Kwan O Line), Ngau Tau Kok (Kwun Tong Line), Sunny Bay (Disneyland Resort Line), Che Kung Temple (Ma On Shan Line) and Fo Tan (East Rail Line).

The new Smart Single Journey ticket will feature a new design and are available for sale at those stations where the ticket issuing machines have been upgraded. The Smart Single Journey tickets will progressively replace the existing magnetic-strip Single Journey tickets. The MTR Corporation plans to finish this task by the end of the first half of 2014.

How to use the new Smart Single Journey MTR tickets:

1. Buy the new Smart Single Journey ticket at one of the ticket issuing machines.

2. Look for the special blue designed entrance gates.

3. Enter the MTR stations by touching the Octopus Processor when passing through the gate.

4. Exit the MTR station by inserting the Smart Single Journey MTR ticket into the ticket slot of the blue gates. In case you accidentally touch the Octopus Processor when exiting the MTR gates a light indicator will remind you to insert your smart ticket into the ticket slot.
