The long awaited Xiqu Centre for Chinese Opera finally opened. It adds another attraction and landmark to Hong Kong’s must-see list. The art venue began its soft-opening on December 30, 2018. However, the official opening ceremony took place a little bit later. On January 20, 2019 the new performing arts venue officially opened at the West Kowloon Cultural District.

The Xiqu Centre is the first major venue to open in the new West Kowloon Cultural District. In close proximity you can find the High Speed Rail Terminal, the ELEMENTS Mall and the popular sky100 Hong Kong Observation Deck.

Besides the traditional Yau Ma Tei Theatre, the new venue is the place to watch and enjoy Cantonese Opera. It position itself as the new contemporary gateway to Chinese Opera. But enjoying Cantonese Opera is not the only thing. This world-class art facility also promotes other forms of Chinese traditional theatre. The art hub plans to host exhibitions, film screenings, xiqu demonstrations, guided tours as well as several workshops.

The new Xiqu Centre for Chinese Opera is also a new landmark. Revery Architecture (formerly known as Bing Thom Architects) and Ronald Lu & Partners designed this masterpiece. The building is inspired by traditional Chinese lanterns. While the entrance looks like the opening of a typical stage curtain. It certainly will not only become a hotspot for Chinese Opera lovers, but also for architecture enthusiasts.

Official Opening Performance of the Xiqu Centre for Chinese Opera

The Reincarnation of the Red Plum is the official opening performance of the Xiqu Centre for Chinese Opera. The opera piece is performed by Connie Chan Po-chu and Mui Suet-see. This classic opera piece marks its 60th anniversary and is performed in Cantonese. Rest assured that you have a chance to experience a wealth of Cantonese and Chinese Opera stars in the near future.

How to Get to the Xiqu Centre for Chinese Opera

By subway: The most convenient way is to take the MTR to Austin station and take Exit F (it’s about 5 minutes walk walking through the pedestrian underpass). If you arrive at the Express Rail Link via the new HSR bullet train, you can exit the Hong Kong West Kowloon Station at Exit G and walk approx. 2 minutes. Alternatively, you also can take the MTR to Jordan and take Exit C2 (it’s about 15 minutes walk from this subway station).
